Senegal constitutional reform: Assembly Speaker Ousmane Sonko sets deadline for President Bassirou Diomaye Faye

Dakar — Following the Assembly Presidents’ Conference (CDP) held this past Friday, June 19, Senegal’s National Assembly has adopted an intensive legislative work schedule. Key labor and social security codes are slated for committee review this Saturday, June 20, with full plenary sessions scheduled for Monday, June 22.
Yet all eyes remain fixed on the constitutional reform proposal, which has dominated discussions. In a detailed briefing to Bureau members, Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, disclosed that no formal response has been received from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the mandatory opinion requested on this constitutional amendment.
Confronted with this silence from the Executive branch, the parliamentary leader has imposed a firm deadline: June 22. Should the presidency fail to provide its opinion by this date, the Bureau will immediately convene to advance the legislative process regardless of executive input. Sonko emphasized his determination to see this constitutional reform debated and voted on before the current ordinary session concludes.
The Assembly Speaker also used the platform to highlight two critical financial documents long awaited from the Executive: the amended Finance Bill (LFR) and the Budget Orientation Debate (DOB) document. With both chambers now in motion, the legislative and executive powers are locked in a high-stakes countdown.
Stay tuned for further developments.
