Sénégal: pastef’s refusal to join government raises political questions

The newly appointed Prime Minister of Senegal, Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lô, unveiled his 30-member cabinet on Monday evening. However, the government’s composition notably excludes key figures from the Pastef party and close allies of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. The absence of these prominent members has sparked intense debate, as the Pastef party holds a majority in the national assembly. Party officials cite “disagreements” as the reason for their refusal, but what exactly are these disagreements about?

While the Pastef party has largely distanced itself from the new government, five of its members have been included in the cabinet. This partial inclusion raises further questions: could these ministers face internal sanctions or even expulsion from the party? The political landscape in Senegal remains tense as the government begins its mandate.
