Tensions between Ousmane Sonko and Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye have intensified just days after the latter reshuffled the government. Initial talks aimed at integrating key members of the Pastef-Les Patriotes party into the new executive collapsed, leading to a firm announcement from the party’s leadership. In an official statement released on June 1 and shared by Sonko via his Facebook page, Pastef declared that no representatives from its ranks would join the upcoming cabinet.
The party emphasized its decision was made with a “spirit of responsibility” and in line with its governing bodies’ directives. Over the past week, Pastef’s leadership engaged in several discussions with the head of state to negotiate the terms of participation. A lengthy meeting between Sonko and Faye on the morning of June 1 revealed both convergences and deep-rooted disagreements regarding the role of the parliamentary majority in shaping the executive’s structure.
Governance disputes stall cabinet formation
Following the inconclusive exchange, Pastef’s Executive Committee (COMEX) reviewed the situation and submitted revised proposals to the president. However, these were not met with approval. Faced with this deadlock, the party opted to withdraw entirely from the government formation process. In its statement, Pastef “will not participate in the next government nor be represented by any minister”.
This move carries significant political implications, especially as Senegalese citizens seek solutions to pressing economic and social challenges. Despite the breakdown in negotiations, Pastef extended its “full support to the new team”, signaling intent to continue its work from the National Assembly, where Sonko now serves as Speaker. The coming days will reveal the full impact of this political shift at the highest levels of Senegal’s government.
