Somalia faces looming famine as crisis deepens across the horn of africa

The Horn of Africa is on the brink of disaster as Somalia teeters on the edge of a catastrophic food shortage. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has raised urgent alarms about a worsening hunger crisis, with nearly 6.5 million people already trapped in severe food insecurity. Years of relentless drought have ravaged livelihoods, leaving communities vulnerable and desperate.

pastoralism crumbles under drought pressure

Two consecutive seasons of failed rains have pushed Somalia back toward the devastating hunger levels last seen in 2022. For over 60% of the population, pastoralism has long been the backbone of survival—until now. With livestock herds collapsing, families are losing their primary source of food and income. Entire communities are abandoning their homes, fleeing toward overcrowded displacement camps in search of survival.

In Dhusamareb, a 61-year-old herder watched helplessly as 90% of his goats and two-thirds of his camels perished within months. “I fear the people will meet the same fate as my animals,” he shared. In the Nugal region, a 19-year-old mother fled after her entire herd died, desperate to protect her children from starvation.

mass displacement strains humanitarian aid

More than half a million people have been uprooted in 2025 alone, driven from their homes by both conflict and the relentless drought, particularly in the rugged Al-Miskat hills of the Bari region in Puntland. As donor funds dwindle, humanitarian groups are being forced to scale back critical food distributions, clean water access, and medical care—just as needs reach their peak.

Since November 2025, the ICRC has provided lifesaving support to over 5,000 displaced families. Efforts include restoring water points in Bari and Sanaag, delivering equipment to revive dried-up wells, and treating severely malnourished children at the stabilization center in Kismayo. The organization also supports 11 clinics run by the Somali Red Crescent Society, ensuring life-saving care reaches those in greatest danger.

a race against time to avert disaster

The ICRC warns that without immediate rainfall and a substantial boost in humanitarian funding, millions more could slide into extreme hunger. Somalia stands at a pivotal crossroads—every passing day without action increases the risk of a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe.
