Through its leader Patricia Tomaino Ndam Njoya, the Union Démocratique du Cameroun is speaking out against the inhumane treatment of a citizen.
The UDC has expressed deep alarm following reports that political activist Jacques Bertrand Mang was allegedly subjected to torture and various forms of inhumane treatment. The political organization, led by its president, has issued a stern condemnation of these practices, which are explicitly forbidden by the Constitution of Cameroon. The party stated that if these allegations are proven true, they would represent a massive violation of basic human rights and the core principles of the rule of law.
In a formal communication, the party emphasized that no form of civic engagement or personal dispute can ever serve as a justification for the use of torture, violence, or any cruel and degrading treatment. To this end, the UDC is calling upon the relevant authorities to shed full light on this situation. The party insists on the need to protect the physical and mental well-being of Jacques Bertrand Mang and to ensure his legal rights are strictly upheld.
Jacques Bertrand Mang is well-known for his vocal stance on social inequality, the hardships faced by the people of Cameroon, and issues regarding national governance. The activist is currently at the center of a developing situation following reports of abuse at a police station in Douala on June 30, 2026. During a live stream on his Facebook page, he was heard pleading with officers to let him leave. The response he received was that he could not be released while in a state of anger. Despite his efforts to depart, he was blocked from leaving the premises and told he must wait for a superior officer to arrive.
This incident follows a history of legal and physical challenges for Jacques Bertrand Mang, who has previously been detained and even forcibly placed in a medical center for psychiatric treatment. His public declarations have led to multiple legal complaints. Through his social media videos, he frequently targets the conduct of the police, gendarmerie, customs officers, and municipal authorities, as well as high-ranking politicians and public figures. According to recent information, he is currently being held in police custody.
