UN assembly praises DRC’s fight against sexual violence in conflict zones

Global recognition for DRC’s efforts to combat sexual violence in conflict zones

The United Nations Security Council convened a critical session this week, with China’s ambassador Fu Cong delivering a powerful statement condemning the alarming rise in sexual violence in conflict zones worldwide. The meeting, chaired by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), highlighted the devastating impact of these crimes on women and girls, particularly in war-torn regions.

Escalating crisis in conflict zones

Ambassador Fu Cong emphasized that sexual violence has surged in recent years, with conflicts in Africa and other regions witnessing a disturbing increase in these atrocities. He noted that these crimes violate multiple UN Security Council resolutions and international humanitarian law, causing profound and lasting trauma to victims and their communities.

The Chinese diplomat pointed to the DRC as one of the countries most severely affected, where ongoing conflicts in the eastern regions have led to widespread sexual violence. The situation has been exacerbated by the activities of local and foreign armed groups, as well as the aggression attributed to neighboring Rwanda through the M23 rebel movement.

Call for international cooperation and national sovereignty

Fu Cong underscored the importance of respecting national sovereignty while urging countries to take decisive action to prevent and combat sexual violence. He called for the international community to support affected nations in strengthening their security and legal frameworks to ensure justice and protection for victims.

“The UN Secretary-General’s report highlights countries like the DRC and Colombia that have made significant progress in addressing sexual violence through tailored national solutions. These efforts include improved investigations, military and police reforms, public reparations, and comprehensive support for survivors and children born of these crimes. China commends these initiatives and calls for continued international support to sustain these critical programs.”

The path to lasting peace

The ambassador stressed that restoring peace and stability is the only sustainable solution to eradicating sexual violence in conflict zones. He called for a unified global approach to conflict resolution, emphasizing the need for diplomatic prevention, mediation, and ceasefires. “Only through peace can we create an environment where justice and humanitarian assistance can thrive,” he stated.

Supporting survivors and rebuilding lives

Fu Cong also highlighted the urgent need to strengthen support systems for survivors. He called on the international community to provide stable and predictable funding to ensure access to medical care, psychological support, legal assistance, education, and economic reintegration programs. “The current funding shortages are leaving countless survivors without recourse. We urge donor countries to honor their commitments and provide the necessary resources,” he said.

The session comes at a critical time for the DRC, where women in conflict zones continue to face unimaginable horrors. Despite diplomatic efforts to broker peace, the situation on the ground remains dire, with armed groups and regional tensions perpetuating the cycle of violence.
