West africa adopts landmark gender and green economy initiative

Abidjan, May 22, 2026 — The ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development (ECGD) has joined forces with UN Women and key ECOWAS agencies to unveil a groundbreaking regional program focused on gender equality, climate resilience, and green economic growth. The initiative, endorsed after a two-day workshop in Abidjan, marks a pivotal step toward integrating sustainable development goals across West Africa.

The high-level meeting, convened on May 15–16 at the ECOWAS Resident Representative office in Côte d’Ivoire, brought together policymakers and development experts to finalize the program’s strategic framework and operational roadmap. The initiative aims to bolster regional efforts in addressing gender disparities, climate vulnerability, and ecological transitions while aligning with the ECOWAS Climate and Gender Action Plan.

empowering women and youth through sustainable transitions

Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the ECGD, highlighted the dual nature of ecological transition—presenting both challenges and opportunities for women and girls across West Africa. She emphasized the need for targeted policies that ensure their meaningful participation in green economies.

Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women’s Country Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, framed the initiative as a critical shift from policy declarations to tangible action. “This program turns commitments into measurable outcomes,” she stated, underscoring its role in tackling climate and economic disparities in the region.

Dr. Kalilou Sylla, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, reinforced the importance of an inclusive green transition. “We must design pathways that create real economic opportunities for women and youth,” he noted, stressing the program’s potential to drive equitable growth.

next steps: adoption and implementation

The finalized program is slated for adoption during a working session scheduled from June 29 to July 6, 2026, in Lomé, Togo. The upcoming meeting will finalize funding mechanisms and implementation strategies to ensure the initiative’s success across member states.
