WHO’s support for health NGOs in Mali amid crisis

WHO strengthens partnerships with health NGOs in Mali to tackle humanitarian challenges

Since 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) has led coordination efforts for health partners under the health cluster in Mali. As of 2025, the country faces a severe humanitarian crisis, with 6.4 million people—nearly 28% of Mali’s population—requiring urgent assistance. The humanitarian response plan remains critically underfunded at just 8.5%, with only 6% allocated to the health sector, severely limiting humanitarian actors’ ability to meet pressing needs.

To address these gaps, the second reserve allocation from the Humanitarian Response Fund for Africa and Other Countries (FHRAOC) has been directed toward Mali, focusing on displaced populations affected by armed violence and insecurity, particularly in regions like Gao, Mopti, and Ségou. The health sector was prioritized for funding following WHO advocacy, backed by compelling data highlighting the vulnerability of these communities in accessing essential healthcare services.
