Rebuilding relations: Bénin and Niger tackle shared challenges

A landmark meeting in Niamey between Bénin’s President Romuald Wadagni and Niger’s military leader General Abdourahamane Tiani signals a new chapter in bilateral relations. This official visit by the Béninese head of state follows nearly three years of strained political, security and economic ties between Cotonou and Niamey.

The discussions centered on three critical priorities: counterterrorism cooperation, border reopening and economic revitalization. These issues have been major sticking points since the military takeover in Niger in July 2023.

The economic stakes couldn’t be higher. Years of border closures have crippled trade flows, disrupted operations at the Port of Cotonou and devastated livelihoods on both sides of the frontier. As a landlocked nation, Niger relies heavily on Bénin’s transport corridors for critical imports and exports.

On the security front, both countries face mounting threats from armed groups operating near their shared border. Strengthened collaboration in this area has become essential to prevent further destabilization in the region.

While an immediate border reopening hasn’t been officially announced, this meeting represents a significant turning point in relations.
