Benin and Togo strengthen economic ties and regional security

During a working visit to Lomé, Beninese President Romuald Wadagni reaffirmed with Togolese counterpart Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé their shared commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation, regional integration, and cross-border security coordination.

The Lomé stopover extends an ongoing West African tour by the new Beninese leader, who has already visited Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso. This itinerary underscores President Wadagni’s strategy of prioritizing neighboring relations across the region.

On Wednesday in Lomé, the two heads of state held extensive talks focused on strengthening economic partnerships, deepening regional integration, and enhancing security collaboration between their nations.

Since assuming office, President Wadagni has made regional diplomacy a cornerstone of his administration. His visits to neighboring capitals—including Abuja, Niamey, and Ouagadougou—demonstrate a consistent emphasis on fostering closer ties and shared stability in West Africa.

The joint communiqué released after the meeting highlighted their resolve to solidify the long-standing bonds of friendship, solidarity, and cooperation between Benin and Togo. Both leaders emphasized the need for continuous political dialogue to uphold peace, stability, and mutual trust in the subregion.

Economic discussions took center stage, with both sides celebrating the steady growth in trade exchange while agreeing to expand connectivity infrastructure, streamline cross-border trade, and attract more private investment.

On regional matters, the presidents reaffirmed their dedication to full West African integration and the unhindered movement of people, goods, and services. They also expressed shared concerns about rising terrorism and transnational crime, pledging to boost joint security efforts.

At the conclusion of the visit, President Wadagni extended an official invitation to Faure Gnassingbé to visit Benin. The Togolese leader accepted, with diplomatic teams set to finalize the visit’s details in due course.
