Benin border security foils migrant convoy in Kassouala

Vigilant border controls have yielded significant results in northeastern Bénin. On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, police officers stationed at the Okpara bridge, located within the Kassouala district, successfully halted a group of 24 individuals. Among them was a young Béninois citizen, now under suspicion of orchestrating the clandestine passage.

The operation unfolded in the early morning, around 8:30 a.m., during a routine inspection. Law enforcement personnel identified 23 travelers, all Nigerian nationals of Hausa ethnicity, who were reportedly en route to Burkina Faso.

Brought to the police station for further questioning, the migrants detailed their journey. They revealed that they had departed from Tchaki, a locality in Nigeria, before continuing on foot and spending the night in Boukouro, a Béninois village situated near the border. Their stated intention was to reach gold panning sites in Burkina Faso to seek their fortune.

While verifications confirmed that all these travelers possessed valid identification documents, authorities are now delving into the precise circumstances of their journey. Particular suspicion has fallen on their companion, a 20-year-old Béninois man from Bassila, who resides in Parakou. He is currently suspected of having orchestrated this illicit movement.

All individuals apprehended have been transferred to the Tchaourou police station. An active investigation is underway to shed light on this case and determine whether it points to an organized network involved in migrant trafficking, a pressing concern in African society news.
