Bénin: taxi-moto drivers in Kétou now required to wear uniforms

In Kétou, motorcycle taxi operators will soon be required to work in uniform. The local government has launched a registration drive ahead of this reform, which is intended to enhance safety, improve driver identification, and bring better organisation to urban transport.

The decision covers all six districts of the municipality and aims to regulate the activities of motorbike taxi drivers more effectively. The mayor’s office states that the measure will facilitate driver identification, bolster rider safety, and help organise transport more efficiently.

To implement the policy, a registration campaign will take place from July 6 to July 20, 2026, at the administrative secretariats of each district. Drivers must bring a valid identification document to be enrolled. This step is mandatory to receive the official uniform.

After this period, only drivers who have been properly registered and who wear the uniform will be allowed to carry passengers. The municipality warns that any driver failing to comply with this requirement will face penalties outlined in existing regulations.

Local authorities are also urging residents to support the reform by choosing officially identified drivers. District chiefs, motorcycle taxi driver associations, and security services have been tasked with enforcing the new rule.
