Strengthening Burkina Faso-Serbia ties: a bold step toward shared progress
Ouagadougou recently welcomed a high-level delegation from Serbia, led by parliamentarian Slavenko Ristic, to explore new avenues of collaboration between the two nations. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabè Abroad, was attended by Burkina Faso’s top diplomats, including Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré and Deputy Minister Bêbgnasgnan Stella Eldine Kabré/Kaboré.
During the working visit, both delegations examined potential areas of cooperation, with a strong focus on defense, security, and professional training. Slavenko Ristic, also CEO of the Serbian defense technology firm Tehnicki Remont Bratunac, praised Burkina Faso’s leadership under President Ibrahim Traoré, calling the country’s direction ‘visionary and inspiring’.

Ristic emphasized Serbia’s eagerness to play a greater role on the African continent, stating, ‘Africa is the future, and we want to be part of it.’ He also acknowledged the importance of Burkina Faso’s strategic vision in fostering balanced international partnerships.
Minister Traoré welcomed Serbia’s proactive interest, noting that the visit reflects a growing recognition of Burkina Faso’s role in global affairs. He highlighted the country’s ongoing efforts to diversify international partnerships, particularly with Eastern European nations, and stressed the need for mutually beneficial collaborations.
The Burkinabè diplomat also urged his Serbian counterpart to help bridge understanding between African realities and European policymakers, promoting fairer and more equitable cooperation frameworks.

In response, Ristic committed to advocating for Burkina Faso and Africa in European forums, aiming to rebalance cooperation dynamics between the two continents. The meeting signals a significant step forward in strengthening ties between Ouagadougou and Belgrade, as Burkina Faso continues to pursue a diversified foreign policy to enhance its global standing.
Why this partnership matters for Africa’s future
This engagement underscores Burkina Faso’s proactive approach to international diplomacy, aligning with its broader strategy to forge alliances beyond traditional partners. For Serbia, the move reflects a growing recognition of Africa’s economic and geopolitical significance.
By prioritizing defense, security, and human capital development, both nations are laying the groundwork for sustainable collaboration. The discussions also highlighted the importance of mutual learning and shared progress in navigating global challenges.
As Burkina Faso strengthens its role on the world stage, partnerships like this one demonstrate the potential for African-led initiatives to shape the continent’s future in cooperation with international allies.
