World Bank Injects €142 Million to Transform Burkina Faso’s Health System
The World Bank has greenlit a groundbreaking financial package totaling €142 million (USD 150 million) from the International Development Association (IDA) and an additional USD 17 million from the Global Financing Facility (GFF) to fund the Performance and Resilience Strengthening of Health Systems Project (PRPRSS).
This ambitious initiative targets adolescents, women, and children under five, focusing on disease surveillance, enhanced healthcare access, and improved nutrition services. It will span the entire country, with special emphasis on internally displaced persons (IDPs) and underserved communities struggling with limited healthcare access.
Aligning with National and Regional Health Priorities
The PRPRSS aligns seamlessly with the World Bank’s West and Central Africa strategy, which emphasizes strengthening essential institutions to deliver fundamental social services. This project complements the recently approved Human Capital Protection Project (USD 100.4 million), which aims to elevate the quality of essential social services nationwide.
« Human development is the cornerstone of social inclusion and a top priority for the World Bank, » noted Hamoud Abdel Wedoud Kamil, World Bank Resident Representative in Burkina Faso. « This project reinforces resilience and addresses current health sector challenges, directly supporting government-led initiatives for sustainable progress. »
Prioritizing Vulnerable Groups for Sustainable Health Outcomes
The initiative underscores the critical role of equitable healthcare access in driving national development. Luc Laviolette, Head of the GFF Secretariat, emphasized: « Ensuring women, adolescents, and children receive quality healthcare is one of the most impactful investments a government can make to propel a nation toward prosperity. The GFF is honored to partner with Burkina Faso in building a robust, resilient health system that leaves no one behind—especially in the most fragile regions. »
Meanwhile, Moussa Dieng, World Bank Health Portfolio Manager, highlighted the project’s strategic timing: « This intervention arrives at a pivotal moment, bolstering Burkina Faso’s capacity to respond to health emergencies while elevating the quality and utilization of healthcare and nutrition services. It also reinforces our support for the Ministry of Health’s reforms aimed at improving governance, equity, and sustainable financing within the sector. »
A Holistic Approach to Health System Strengthening
The PRPRSS is designed to address multiple facets of Burkina Faso’s healthcare challenges, including:
- Enhanced disease surveillance to detect and mitigate health threats promptly.
- Expanded access to essential services for marginalized populations, including IDPs and rural communities.
- Nutrition interventions to combat malnutrition, particularly among vulnerable groups.
- Strengthened health governance through sustainable financing and policy reforms.
