Burkina Faso officially severs diplomatic ties with France

Ouagadougou confirms end of diplomatic ties with Paris

In a significant development for Africa politics, Burkina Faso has formally ended its diplomatic relationship with the Republic of France. An official communiqué, issued on Friday, June 26, 2026, confirmed this pivotal decision, marking a new chapter in the nation’s foreign policy.

The government’s statement declared: “The Government of Burkina Faso informs national and international opinion of its decision to sever diplomatic relations with the French Republic, effective today, June 26, 2026. This decision follows a thorough evaluation of the current state of bilateral relations between Burkina Faso and France. Indeed, the essential conditions for fostering relations based on mutual respect, reciprocal trust, adherence to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs, and national sovereignty are no longer met.”

The communiqué from Ouagadougou elaborated on the rationale behind this move, citing a series of grievances against the current French authorities. It highlighted “incessant activism by the regime in place in France against the interests of Burkina Faso,” alongside “neo-colonial ambitions” manifested through “active support for subversive networks and terrorists” plaguing Burkina Faso and the wider Sahel region. The government further condemned the “perfidy and partiality of discourses and opinions” aimed at isolating Burkina Faso within the international community.

“Faced with these imperialist aims of dominating our country and subjugating our people, we have chosen responsibility and sovereignty,” the statement affirmed. It also clarified that this decision does not undermine the deep historical, human, cultural, and social bonds shared between the Burkinabè and French peoples. Instead, it is exclusively directed at the institutional framework governing diplomatic relations between the two states.

The government of Burkina Faso reassured both national and international observers of its commitment to safeguarding French nationals and their interests residing within its borders, reiterating its hospitality. Citizens were urged to demonstrate responsibility, restraint, and civility towards French expatriates and all foreign residents in Burkina Faso, in strict adherence to national laws.

Underscoring its future direction, the government reaffirmed its dedication to pursuing an independent foreign policy. This policy will prioritize the diversification of partnerships, strengthen South-South cooperation, cultivate balanced relationships with all states, and promote peace, security, and sustainable development. Burkina Faso remains open to dialogue with all nations committed to peace and justice, on principles of mutual respect, reciprocity, sovereign equality, and the defense of legitimate interests, aspiring to build a free, just, and more united world.

Official announcement: Burkina Faso ends diplomatic relations with France

The Government of Burkina Faso officially informs the national and international community of its decision to terminate diplomatic relations with the French Republic, effective June 26, 2026.

This decision stems from a comprehensive review of the current bilateral relationship between Burkina Faso and France. It has been determined that the fundamental prerequisites for fostering relations built on mutual respect, reciprocal trust, non-interference in domestic affairs, and national sovereignty are no longer present.

This reality is evidenced by, among other factors, persistent actions by the French government that undermine Burkina Faso’s interests, clear neo-colonial ambitions, and active support for subversive groups and terrorists causing devastation in our country and the Sahel. Furthermore, the deceitful and biased narratives and opinions regarding our nation aim to ostracize it from the international community.

In response to these imperialist designs for domination and the enslavement of our populace, we have opted for responsibility and unwavering sovereignty. The Government emphasizes that this decision does not diminish the historical, human, cultural, and social bonds uniting the Burkinabè and French peoples. Its scope is strictly limited to the institutional diplomatic framework between the two states.

The Government assures both national and international stakeholders of its unwavering resolve to protect all foreign nationals, reaffirming its hospitality and commitment to safeguarding their interests. It calls upon all citizens to act responsibly, with restraint and civility, towards French nationals and all expatriates residing in Burkina Faso, in strict compliance with the Republic’s laws.

The Government reiterates its commitment to an independent foreign policy, focusing on diversifying its international partnerships, enhancing South-South cooperation, fostering equitable relations with all states, and championing peace, security, and sustainable development.

Burkina Faso’s Government remains receptive to dialogue with all states in the international community, provided it is founded on mutual respect, reciprocity, sovereign equality, and the protection of each nation’s legitimate interests. We are dedicated to collaborating with all peace and justice-loving nations to forge a world that is free, more equitable, and more unified.
