Diplomatic alignment strengthens Morocco’s stance on Sahara sovereignty

Burundi has once again reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s full sovereignty over its territory, including the Sahara region. This declaration came during a high-level meeting in Rabat between Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edouard Bizimana, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.

The visit, which took place on June 19, 2026, culminated in a joint communiqué where Bujumbura not only endorsed Rabat’s position but also reiterated its backing for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan—presented as the most viable and realistic solution to end the decades-long regional dispute.

International recognition of Morocco’s autonomy initiative

In its statement, Burundi highlighted its support for the United Nations-led negotiations, emphasizing that the 2797th UN Security Council resolution legitimizes Morocco’s autonomy plan as the foundation for a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable political settlement. This endorsement adds to the growing diplomatic momentum Morocco has been building to strengthen international backing for its initiative.

With this renewed alignment, Burundi joins a growing list of African nations that have publicly supported Morocco’s position, reinforcing the Kingdom’s strategic diplomatic efforts in the region.
