Cameroon senate president urges stronger action against sexual violence and femicides
At the opening of the second ordinary session of the Senate on Tuesday in Yaoundé, Senate President Aboubakary Abdoulaye urged the Cameroonian government to step up the fight against sexual violence against children and femicides, which he described as increasingly alarming.
The Senate President and Lamido of Rey Bouba, Aboubakary Abdoulaye, made a solemn appeal to the government for firmer action against sexual violence targeting children and femicides in Cameroon.
Speaking at the opening of the second ordinary session of the Senate in Yaoundé, in the presence of Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, the President of the National Assembly, and several members of the government, he denounced acts that seriously harm the dignity, integrity, and lives of victims.
“Sexual abuse against women and children, as well as acts of femicide, must be fought with determination,” he declared, calling on authorities to put an end to this violence.
This statement comes amid strong national emotion following the alleged rape of a three-year-old girl in Yaoundé. The case, which sparked protests and a wave of indignation, reignites the debate on child protection and the need to strengthen measures for preventing and punishing gender-based violence.
