Cameroun dismantles human trafficking network luring youths with fake foreign job offers
Posing as legitimate multi-level marketing firms, operators baited job seekers with promises of lucrative overseas employment before ensnaring them in exploitation schemes. The trap was sprung by gendarmerie units in multiple cities.
Under the guise of network marketing ventures, these criminals dangled dreams of well-paying jobs abroad before victims found themselves trapped in modern-day slavery. Thirteen alleged members of a sprawling human trafficking syndicate have been apprehended across Cameroon and are now facing justice.
The suspects, reportedly operating under various aliases including QNET, IGNITE and UNIMEC, specifically targeted students, unemployed graduates and job seekers. According to authorities, their modus operandi involved enticing victims with false promises of overseas employment, only to subject them to exploitation through forced labor and illegal recruitment practices.
Following an extensive investigation led by the National Gendarmerie, twelve individuals were arrested within Cameroon’s borders. Two primary suspects, however, remain at large—believed to be operating from neighboring Congo and the Central African Republic. Authorities have confirmed that manhunts are underway to locate these fugitives, with operations continuing in major urban centers including Douala and Bamenda.
