dutch stopper jean-paul van hecke calls £50 million tottenham move a « career milestone »

Defender Jean-Paul van Hecke addressed the media ahead of Saturday’s crucial clash against Sweden, just days after completing his blockbuster move to Tottenham Hotspur.

When asked about the significance of becoming football’s latest £50 million man, van Hecke responded with characteristic humility: « It’s difficult for me to comment on the financial side. My focus is on what this means for my former club and the academy that developed me. The actual figure means nothing to me personally. It won’t change who I am. Though I am proud to be joining one of England’s elite clubs. »

Sporting a noticeable shiner under his right eye during the press conference, the 26-year-old insisted the transfer had not distracted him from his primary objective: helping the Netherlands advance in the 2026 World Cup. « My full attention remains on the team and the upcoming match against Sweden. Ronald Koeman understood this and gave me the space needed to finalise the deal. »

« Being here is an incredible experience. I’m truly proud to represent this shirt. »

Jean-Paul van Hecke

Van Hecke, who made his tournament debut in the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Japan, admitted the dual pressures of a career-defining transfer and international football could have overwhelmed a less experienced player. But he’s compartmentalised both challenges with remarkable composure: « This move represents a major step forward in my career. Playing for Tottenham boosts my confidence enormously. Now I’m fully focused on the Oranje. This World Cup adventure is something I’ll cherish forever. I hope we can compete deep into the tournament. »

Born in Arnemuiden, a coastal village so close to the English coast that clear days reveal the white cliffs of Dover, van Hecke’s footballing journey has come full circle. His transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion to Spurs creates a financial windfall for his boyhood club NAC Breda, which negotiated a 7.5% sell-on clause in 2020. « It’s well-deserved for NAC Breda », he reflected, acknowledging the club’s pivotal role in his development.

Looking ahead to Tottenham and Oranje

Though he’s now plying his trade in north London, van Hecke will reunite with familiar faces when Tottenham face Brighton in the Premier League. Manager Roberto De Zerbi, whom he worked under during two seasons at the south coast club (2022–2024), will be waiting. Back in Qatar, he’ll find former Brighton teammates Xavi Simons (sidelined for this World Cup through injury) and Micky van de Ven. The latter’s future remains uncertain, with Liverpool and Barcelona reportedly circling.
