President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema officially opened Gabon’s inaugural data center yesterday within the Nkok Special Economic Zone. This pivotal infrastructure, developed by ST Digital Data Center Services, marks a significant stride for the nation. The inauguration ceremony also featured the signing of a crucial Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization and Innovation and ST Digital, specifically designed to empower Gabonese startups.
This dual undertaking is poised to fortify local data hosting capabilities, enhance cybersecurity measures, and accelerate the country’s comprehensive digital transformation. Built to stringent international standards and boasting Tier III certification, this cutting-edge facility is set to dramatically improve national data storage, underpin robust cloud computing services, and provide essential support to both governmental bodies and private enterprises. Ultimately, this strategic move underscores the head of state’s unwavering commitment to establishing Gabon’s resolute digital sovereignty.
The established partnership grants emerging businesses privileged access to a suite of professional services. Selected startups will receive a dedicated virtual machine, 120 GB of SSD storage, 8 GB of RAM, four virtual processors, a public IP address, an SSL certificate, comprehensive technical support, and advantageous preferential rates.
The Ministry will play a crucial role in identifying eligible beneficiaries, actively promoting local data hosting, and spearheading vital cybersecurity awareness campaigns. Laïka Mba, the Director General of ST Digital, powerfully articulated the significance of this milestone, stating, “possessing a national data center in Gabon transcends mere technological triumph; it is a profound act of sovereignty.” She further emphasized, “it provides the sacred assurance that our state secrets, national archives, public services, and citizens’ data are no longer reliant on foreign infrastructures.”
ST Digital commits to ensuring robust data security and continuous technical assistance. This strategic public-private collaboration is designed to foster the creation and hosting of innovative digital solutions within Gabon, thereby cultivating an environment highly conducive to innovation, job creation, and increased investment across the nation.
