In Their Eyes: photography exhibition in Brussels documents the humanitarian reality in Mali

A visual journey into the heart of the Malian crisis

From January 23 to February 12, the Halles Saint-Géry in Bruxelles will host a poignant photographic exhibition titled “In Their Eyes.” This event serves as a platform to raise awareness about the ongoing humanitarian emergency in Mali, a crisis that currently affects more than 6.4 million people across the nation.

This initiative is a collaborative effort involving seven major humanitarian organizations: Médecins du Monde, Action contre la Faim, the Conseil norvégien pour les réfugiés, the Conseil Danois pour les Réfugiés, International Medical Corps, the International Rescue Committee, and Première Urgence Internationale. The project is carried out with the financial backing of the Union européenne.

Documenting life through the lens of Tiécoura N’Daou

The exhibition features roughly thirty images captured by the Malian photographer Tiécoura N’Daou. These photographs were taken in September 2025 within the regions of Gao and Mopti, areas where the participating NGOs implement critical aid projects supported by the Union européenne. The primary goal of this collection is to showcase the crisis from the perspective of those who experience it firsthand. By highlighting personal stories of displacement and resilience, the exhibition also pays tribute to the vital work performed by humanitarian teams in the field.

A critical humanitarian situation

Humanitarian agencies describe the current circumstances in Mali as deeply alarming. Internal displacement has forced over 400,000 people to flee their homes, the vast majority of whom are women and children. The scale of the suffering is immense, with 1.5 million individuals facing a severe food crisis and 1.5 million children under the age of five suffering from acute malnutrition. Furthermore, the year 2024 saw a staggering record of more than 35,000 human rights violations within the country.
