UJPLA condemns Mali’s ban on Jeune Afrique magazine

The Union of Journalists of the Free African Press (UJPLA) has voiced strong condemnation and deep concern over the Malian authorities’ decision to ban the sale and distribution of Jeune Afrique magazine across the entire territory of Mali.

According to the UJPLA, this measure represents a serious infringement on press freedom, freedom of expression, and the fundamental right of Malian citizens to access pluralistic, free, fair, and independent information.

Jeune Afrique is a well-established Pan-African news outlet that has played a pivotal role for decades in fostering democratic debate and providing insightful analysis on political, economic, and social issues across the African continent. The magazine’s prohibition sets a dangerous precedent and signals an authoritarian drift that contradicts Mali’s international human rights commitments.

The UJPLA emphasizes that press freedom is not a privilege granted by authorities but an inalienable right enshrined in international conventions, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

In response to this decision, the UJPLA has taken the following actions:

  • Firmly condemns the arbitrary ban on Jeune Afrique;
  • Demands the immediate reversal of the sales ban on the magazine in Mali;
  • Urges Malian authorities to prioritize dialogue, transparency, and respect for fundamental freedoms;
  • Calls on human rights and press freedom organizations to unite in opposing this regressive measure.

The UJPLA reaffirms its unwavering commitment to defending press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists throughout Africa.
