Mali: deadly drone strikes on civilians ahead of wedding celebrations

The Mali has been shaken by a tragic incident in which at least ten civilians lost their lives in a drone strike carried out by the Malian army. The victims were predominantly young people on their way to participate in a traditional collective wedding ceremony in the central region of the country.

Téné, in the San region, became the epicenter of this devastating event that unfolded on Sunday, casting a dark shadow over what was meant to be a joyous occasion. The drone attack occurred amidst a critical security situation in the nation, following large-scale coordinated offensives by armed groups on April 25 and 26.

«Ten of our children were killed by gunfire whose origin remains unknown,» shared a local resident under the condition of anonymity. «What was supposed to be a moment of celebration in the village turned into profound grief,» he lamented.

A security source, also speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the drone strikes. «The tragedy occurred as villagers were preparing for the second edition of this traditional collective wedding, a major cultural event for this community,» the source explained. According to the source, the strikes targeted «a procession of several motorcycles following one another.» «It was likely the formation of the motorcycles that caught the drones’ attention. At least nine people were killed,» the source added.

A local elected official also confirmed the toll of approximately ten deaths. «A wedding was about to take place when drones killed at least ten civilians. It is truly a mourning,» the official recounted.

context of rising violence

The Mali continues to grapple with escalating insecurity, exacerbated by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda-affiliated jihadist organization, and the predominantly Tuareg Front for the Liberation of Azawad (FLA). The April 25-26 attacks marked a significant escalation in the conflict, further straining the already fragile situation in the region.
