In a decisive turn of events, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a full restoration of security across previously contested regions, where clashes with armed groups had intensified in recent weeks. The announcement comes after weeks of intensified fighting against the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) in the northern territories and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM)—an Al-Qaeda-affiliated faction—operating in central and southern Mali.
Renewed military operations halt insurgent advances
According to an official statement from the Malian military, sustained engagements occurred on Sunday near Anifif, a strategic location situated approximately 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The army reported that reinforcements, both human and material, had been mobilized by the MNLA in a bid to challenge government forces. In response, FAMA units executed a robust counteroffensive, maintaining high operational tempo throughout the day with unwavering discipline and resolve.
Army vows to uphold national sovereignty
The FAMA communiqué underscored an unshakable confidence in the military’s capacity to safeguard Mali’s territorial integrity, protect civilian lives, and dismantle hostile forces. The statement read: « We reaffirm our commitment to defending the nation’s unity with relentless determination and strategic precision. »
Insurgent claims met with skepticism
The MNLA’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had earlier asserted control over Anifif following a resurgence of hostilities. However, these claims were swiftly contradicted by Malian military sources, which dismissed rumors of the group’s alleged leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, being killed in action. Officials confirmed that Akli remains actively engaged in directing military operations against government forces in northern Mali.
