PSG’s road to champions league final: rest, friendlies and tactical adjustments
“Adapting to the schedule is the first priority,” emphasized Luis Enrique during Saturday’s pre-match press briefing ahead of the Ligue 1 finale against neighbours Paris FC. Already crowned French champions, the Parisians traveled a short distance to Stade Jean-Bouin in pursuit of final preparations ahead of the May 30 showdown in Budapest against Arsenal. However, the defending European champions failed to deliver the intensity expected, slipping to a frustrating 2-1 defeat.
“Disappointed” was the sentiment echoed by Luis Enrique, who minced no words: “When you play without ambition or intensity, the outcome speaks for itself.”
A season-ending stretch unlike any other
This year’s road to Budapest presents a uniquely compressed timeline for the club. Unlike last season, when the side played the Coupe de France final against Reims just seven days before thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich, the current squad faces an unprecedented two-week lull before the Champions League decider.
“This end-of-season period is more challenging than usual,” admitted the Spanish tactician. “Last year, the Coupe de France final served as a motivational springboard. Now we have a fortnight to focus exclusively on what may be the most important match in our history.”
Luis Enrique outlined a balanced approach: first, physical and mental recovery, followed by a friendly fixture next weekend to “reintroduce match load” ahead of the final. Attention will also be paid to early updates on Ousmane Dembélé’s knock, which saw him withdrawn at half-time on Sunday. Meanwhile, Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes, Achraf Hakimi and Quentin Ndjantou—all back in individual training on Saturday—could return to full team drills.
Last year, the PSG squad flew to Munich the morning before the final, conducting a final session at Allianz Arena the evening prior to kick-off.
