Senegal coalition challenges sonko’s inflammatory remarks against state institutions

The Diomaye Président coalition has strongly condemned recent statements made by Ousmane Sonko during the inauguration of Pastef’s headquarters in Mbacké. Party officials argue that his remarks, deemed disrespectful toward the Head of State, violate the principles of institutional responsibility expected from high-ranking officials.

coalition warns against undermining democratic norms

In an interview with iRadio, Bassirou Dieng, a spokesperson for the coalition, emphasized that such inflammatory language has no place in a functioning democracy. « In any law-based state, a responsible democracy, or a Republic, it is unacceptable for a National Assembly President to publicly insult the Head of State, » he stated. « These remarks have sparked widespread outrage across social media and traditional outlets, with virtually no one endorsing his statements. »

call for accountability and restraint

Dieng urged Sonko to exercise caution in his public statements, warning that the coalition will no longer tolerate what it views as repeated attacks on Senegal’s institutions. « The Diomaye Président coalition will take a firm stance. From now on, we will not tolerate inflammatory remarks directed at the President of the Republic or other key state figures who embody our institutions, » he declared.

The coalition’s response follows Sonko’s high-profile appearance in Mbacké, where his comments reignited political tensions and intensified debates within the ruling majority.
