Senegal: Ousmane Sonko retains National Assembly presidency after legal victory

The Senegalese Constitutional Council has definitively upheld Ousmane Sonko’s presidency of the National Assembly, rejecting opposition challenges that questioned the legitimacy of his return to Parliament. The court ruled it lacked jurisdiction over the matter, closing the case permanently.
Sonko, who was dismissed as Prime Minister by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye at the end of May, swiftly resumed his role as a deputy before securing the Assembly’s top position through a parliamentary vote.
This landmark judicial decision solidifies his standing within the legislative branch and significantly amplifies his political leverage across Senegal.
Once united by shared political ambitions, Sonko and President Faye now find themselves at odds over critical policy choices, particularly regarding economic strategies and public finance management—a divide that signals a transformative phase in Senegal’s political landscape.
