Senegal presidential decree appoints new head of constitutional council

In a significant development for Senegal’s legal and political landscape, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has appointed Ousmane Diagne as the new head of the Constitutional Council. The decree formalizing this decision was issued on July 13, marking a transition from the late Mamadou Badio Camara, who previously held the position.

Ousmane Diagne brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as Senegal’s Minister of Justice. His appointment follows the Constitutional Council’s review of the recent constitutional reform passed by the National Assembly, a move that solidified President Faye’s agenda.

While the reform was celebrated as a milestone for the administration, it faced opposition from the Pastef party, led by Ousmane Sonko, which had initially championed the constitutional changes. The council’s decision to uphold the reform was seen as a setback for the opposition movement.

The Constitutional Council plays a pivotal role in Senegal’s governance, responsible for ensuring the constitutionality of laws, verifying election-related disputes, and overseeing the integrity of voting processes.
