At the launch of Senegal Space Week 2026, General Birame Diop, representing President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, delivered a keynote address that underscored the critical role of space technology in modern security challenges. Addressing a gathering of international experts and partners, he emphasized that today’s security threats—from terrorism and piracy to cross-border crime—cannot be effectively countered without leveraging advanced data and satellite capabilities.
The minister highlighted the transformative potential of space-based solutions, particularly satellite imagery, advanced mapping, and geospatial intelligence tools. These technologies, he noted, empower defense and security forces to make informed decisions, anticipate risks, and respond more effectively to emerging threats across Senegal’s territory. The event also saw the signing of several partnership agreements aimed at strengthening Senegal’s international cooperation in space innovation and defense.
General Diop further stressed the need to cultivate a new generation of Senegalese talent in space, digital, and innovation-driven industries. He called for sustained investment in research, infrastructure, and skills development to position Senegal as a leading force in Africa’s space sector. The ceremony concluded with a tribute to General Mansour Seck, a pioneering figure in Senegalese aviation history.
