Senegal tightens stance on homosexuality under Sonko’s leadership

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has once again underscored the government’s resolve to enforce stricter laws against homosexuality in Senegal, emphasizing the importance of uniform legal application. Amid mounting international scrutiny, he defends the nation’s sovereign right to determine its own stance on this contentious issue.

The Prime Minister’s renewed remarks come as part of an ongoing debate over the implementation of existing laws and the government’s policy direction regarding homosexuality. Sonko has made it clear that the administration will not tolerate exceptions, regardless of influence or status.

Enforcing laws without exception

In a firm statement, the head of government highlighted the impartial nature of Senegalese legislation, stressing that legal provisions apply equally to all. “There will be no protection for the powerful,” he declared. “When a law is enacted, it is binding for everyone, and its enforcement will be carried out without compromise.”

Sonko also pointed to historical inaction as a contributing factor to the current situation, asserting that previous administrations failed to address the issue adequately. “This is not a new phenomenon,” he noted. “Past regimes did not take the necessary steps. Had they done so, we would not be facing the challenges we see today.”

Defending national sovereignty

Addressing international criticism, particularly from Western partners, the Prime Minister dismissed outside interference as unwarranted. “No one in Senegal opposes this law,” he stated. “The only objections come from the West—especially France. We are in no position to accept lessons from them.” He further rejected any notion of delaying the legislative process, adding that even some African intellectuals have attempted to intervene, but “there will be no moratorium.”
