Sonko drives Senegal’s national parks into sustainable partnerships

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has directed key ministers overseeing Environment, Tourism, Economy, Planning, Cooperation, Finance, and Budget to implement urgent measures aimed at revitalising the management of Senegal’s natural heritage.

The government, in close coordination with the National Council for Investment and Public-Private Partnerships (COSIVRA), is pushing for a forward-thinking model that blends conservation with economic growth. This strategy hinges on public-private partnerships (PPP) to breathe new life into the country’s most vital national parks and ecological sites while ensuring their long-term sustainability.

key ecological jewels set for modernised management

The Prime Minister’s directive zeroes in on some of Senegal’s most prized and ecologically significant locations. The Niokolo-Koba National Park, the Djoudj National Bird Park, the Saloum Delta, Hann Park, the Technopole Reserve in Dakar, and the Lac Rose are all slated for transformation through strategic partnerships. By entrusting private operators with the development and enhancement of these sites—under strict state supervision—the administration aims to inject fresh capital, upgrade visitor infrastructure, and boost revenue generation without compromising environmental safeguards.
