The field of medicine and research in West Africa is about to reach a historic milestone. Sorbonne Université, a leading academic and medical institution in Europe, is now setting its sights on Bénin. A high-level delegation from the French establishment, led by its president, visited the Centre Hospitalier International de Calavi (CHIC) to see this new flagship of Bénin’s public health sector.
This highly strategic visit outlines the shape of a promising alliance aimed at bridging the academic and hospital worlds to boost healthcare services and medical training in the subregion.
A world-class technical platform
Inaugurated to redefine healthcare standards and drastically reduce medical evacuations abroad, CHIC impressed its guests. Spanning over 40,000 square metres with a capacity of more than 430 beds, the centre integrates latest-generation imaging and treatment technologies, particularly in medical oncology, radiotherapy and complex cardiology.
From the care units to the medical-technical hub, the European delegation observed the rigour of infrastructure meeting the strictest international standards.
“The shared ambition is to strengthen excellence in care, training and research for the benefit of the people of Bénin and Africa.”
Towards tailored training and cutting-edge research
Beyond a courtesy visit, this meeting marked the start of an active exploration phase. The goal is clear: jointly design specialised training programmes that directly address CHIC’s advanced needs, while building on existing collaborations in Bénin.
By combining Sorbonne Université’s academic expertise with CHIC’s technological potential, Bénin is not only equipping itself with a modern hospital; it is permanently establishing a reference centre and hub of attractiveness for the medicine of tomorrow on the African continent.
