Niamey hosts pivotal Sahel-Russia diplomatic talks to bolster regional security and economic ties
On Wednesday, July 8, Niamey became the focal point of regional diplomacy as the second round of high-level consultations between foreign ministers of the Sahel Alliance States (AES) and Russia convened in the Nigerien capital. The gathering brought together Bakary Yaou Sangaré of Niger, Abdoulaye Diop of Mali, and Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré of Burkina Faso alongside Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.
The meeting yielded tangible outcomes, with participants affirming the deepening strategic alignment between AES nations and Moscow. Minister Diop highlighted the fruitful and consistent exchanges that have yielded significant dividends across multiple sectors: from enhanced military cooperation to expanded trade and economic development, all underpinned by a shared diplomatic vision.
The discussions placed particular emphasis on the urgent need to strengthen anti-terrorism efforts through intensified military collaboration. Ministers stressed the critical importance of bolstering the operational capabilities of the AES Unified Force, while also prioritizing economic partnerships outlined in the Confederation’s Year Two Roadmap.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reaffirmed his country’s unwavering commitment to fostering mutually beneficial relations with the Sahel Alliance. He underscored Russia’s solidarity with regional security initiatives and its dedication to supporting sustainable development projects that directly improve the lives of local populations.
This follow-up session in Niamey follows the inaugural AES-Russia consultations held in Moscow in April 2025, reflecting a broader pattern of engagement during Lavrov’s recent African diplomatic tour.
