Tchad and Russia deepen ties with military and diplomatic agreements

The Chad and Russia have taken significant steps to strengthen their bilateral ties, particularly in defense and diplomacy, as part of broader efforts to enhance regional security. On July 14, during a joint press conference in Moscow, Chad’s Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul, and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, highlighted the growing importance of their partnership in addressing shared challenges.

Central to this collaboration is a new agreement that grants visa exemptions to holders of diplomatic passports, a move seen as a milestone in deepening mutual trust and cooperation. The discussions also underscored the urgency of combating terrorism in the Sahel region, where both nations play pivotal roles.

Lavrov emphasized the need for collective action against terrorism, pointing to recent geopolitical tensions and regional instability. Meanwhile, Chad’s President, Mahamat Idriss Déby, is set to attend the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit in October, further solidifying his country’s commitment to this strategic alliance.

The Chadian minister praised Russia’s contributions to stabilizing the Sahel, expressing optimism that joint initiatives with regional partners will yield tangible results in the fight against extremism and insecurity.
