The battle for control over northern Mali has reached a new peak of intensity following fierce fighting in the strategic town of Anéfis, located roughly 100 kilometers south of Kidal. In a televised address aired on national television, Mali’s Chief of Army Staff, General Jean Élysée Dao, confirmed a devastating toll on Malian forces, marking one of the bloodiest engagements in recent months.
Heavy casualties on both sides of the conflict
The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have borne the brunt of the offensive in Anéfis. General Dao reported the loss of nearly thirty soldiers, described as fallen martyrs, alongside over sixty wounded, some of whom are in critical condition. The military leadership emphasized the brutal nature of the clashes, highlighting the sacrifices made by its troops in the line of duty.
Opposing forces, comprising separatist factions—particularly the Azawad Liberation Front—and Al-Qaeda-affiliated militants (JNIM), also sustained significant losses, according to military claims. While the enemy coalition has not disclosed exact figures, Malian authorities assert that their operations resulted in the neutralization of numerous combatants. In a rare admission, rebel spokesmen acknowledged the loss of “some of their finest fighters” without specifying numbers.
