Violent clashes erupt in anéfis as Mali’s military faces heavy losses

The battle for control over northern Mali has reached a new peak of intensity following fierce fighting in the strategic town of Anéfis, located roughly 100 kilometers south of Kidal. In a televised address aired on national television, Mali’s Chief of Army Staff, General Jean Élysée Dao, confirmed a devastating toll on Malian forces, marking one of the bloodiest engagements in recent months.

Heavy casualties on both sides of the conflict

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have borne the brunt of the offensive in Anéfis. General Dao reported the loss of nearly thirty soldiers, described as fallen martyrs, alongside over sixty wounded, some of whom are in critical condition. The military leadership emphasized the brutal nature of the clashes, highlighting the sacrifices made by its troops in the line of duty.

Opposing forces, comprising separatist factions—particularly the Azawad Liberation Front—and Al-Qaeda-affiliated militants (JNIM), also sustained significant losses, according to military claims. While the enemy coalition has not disclosed exact figures, Malian authorities assert that their operations resulted in the neutralization of numerous combatants. In a rare admission, rebel spokesmen acknowledged the loss of “some of their finest fighters” without specifying numbers.

Anéfis: the pivotal stronghold in Mali’s northern campaign

Anéfis stands as a crucial linchpin in the ongoing struggle for northern Mali. For the Malian Armed Forces, reinforced by Russian allies, securing Anéfis is vital to severing supply routes used by armed groups and stabilizing the corridor leading to Kidal, a long-standing rebel bastion.

Military sources described the fighting as exceptionally violent. A contingent of Malian soldiers and Russian reinforcements found themselves temporarily encircled in a military outpost, repelling relentless assaults. Relief arrived when a heavily armed convoy, dispatched from Gao with aerial support, enabled government forces to regain the upper hand on the battlefield. Rebel factions, meanwhile, framed their withdrawal as a tactical maneuver to minimize civilian harm.

The transitional government’s credibility tested by relentless violence

The grim toll from Anéfis underscores the enduring challenges of Mali’s security crisis, which has persisted since 2012. For the current military-led administration in Bamako, this heavy loss serves as a critical test of its pledge to restore safety and territorial integrity across the nation.

While the Malian military vows to reclaim every inch of lost territory, the ferocity of the Anéfis battle lays bare the resilience of armed groups in the North. The protracted conflict continues to exact a steep human cost, deepening the region’s crisis and testing the resolve of both the government and its international partners.
