Bénin’s romuald wadagni embarks on crucial Sahel diplomatic tour

Having been sworn into office on May 24, 2026, Bénin’s new President, Romuald Wadagni, is undertaking a significant diplomatic mission this Tuesday, June 2. His itinerary includes visits to Niger and Burkina Faso as part of an extensive West African tour. The primary objective for President Wadagni, succeeding Patrice Talon, is to normalize Bénin’s diplomatic ties with the Alliance of Sahel States.

This landmark journey makes President Wadagni the first Béninese head of state to visit Niger since the pivotal events of July 26, 2023, when General Abdourahamane Tiani assumed power following the overthrow of Mohamed Bazoum.

Previous efforts by two of his predecessors to mediate between the two nations had culminated in a working visit by a Nigérien delegation to Cotonou in July 2024. However, official progress has largely stalled since then.

To date, the borders separating Bénin and Niger remain closed, a situation that has severely impacted the economies of both countries and significantly hindered the free movement of people and goods across the region.

Prior to his engagements in Burkina Faso and Niger, President Romuald Wadagni of Bénin completed his inaugural official foreign visit on Monday, June 1, 2026. This initial trip was to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a nation recognized as Bénin’s primary commercial partner and a crucial strategic neighbor.
