Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister hosts UNODC chief to bolster security collaboration

On June 5, 2026, Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, joined by Deputy Minister Camarade Bêbgnasgnan Stella Eldine Kabre/Kabore, welcomed Dr. Anselme Siméon Sanou, the newly appointed head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Burkina Faso. The high-level meeting marked the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at reinforcing national security frameworks.
During the discussions, Dr. Sanou outlined the UNODC’s strategic priorities for his mandate, emphasizing alignment with Burkina Faso’s national objectives. Key focus areas include combating organized crime, drug trafficking and consumption, arms trafficking, and terrorism. The UNODC leadership expressed full commitment to supporting these efforts through tailored programs and collaborative initiatives.
In response, Minister Traoré commended Dr. Sanou’s appointment, highlighting the value of his local expertise in enhancing operational effectiveness. The Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Burkina Faso’s readiness to work hand-in-hand with the UNODC, leveraging both institutional and civil society partnerships to tackle security challenges and foster regional stability.
