Chad and France strengthen defense ties at Eurosatory security forum
High-level discussions in Paris focus on regional security challenges and enhanced aerial defense capabilities between N’Djamena and Paris.
The Minister of National Defense, Veterans, and War Victims of Chad, General Issakha Malloua Djamouss, met with his French counterpart, Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin, on the sidelines of the Eurosatory defense exhibition in Paris. This meeting follows ongoing political consultations between Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno and French President Emmanuel Macron.
During the talks, the two defense chiefs reviewed the state of bilateral relations and explored ways to reinforce military and security cooperation. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to upholding each other’s strategic interests and sovereignty, as outlined in official statements from the Chadian Ministry of Defense.
The ministers discussed practical steps to implement the Letter of Intent recently signed between Chad and France. They emphasized the importance of a trust-based partnership and continuous dialogue to address evolving security threats in the region.
Chad reiterated its dedication to a balanced and mutually advantageous defense partnership, crucial for regional stability and the enhancement of its armed forces. Key areas of collaboration include aerial defense capabilities, with discussions on pilot training, intelligence sharing, and French technical support to modernize Chadian air assets.
Reports suggest France is seeking renewed access to N’Djamena’s airbase, enabling rapid deployment capabilities in times of crisis. A French military official noted this access would facilitate essential logistical operations. A Chadian general confirmed such cooperation would bolster the country’s ability to counter emerging security threats.
Chadian authorities are increasingly turning toward France for security partnerships, expressing dissatisfaction with proposals from other international partners.
