Congo-drC: Tshisekedi and Sassou N’Guesso push forward major integration projects

Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo paid a working visit to Brazzaville on July 3 to advance bilateral cooperation.

Arriving aboard the Majestic River, a vessel registered in the DRC, the President crossed the Pool Malebo before being received at Brazzaville’s Beach by Congolese Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso.

The meeting between President Tshisekedi and his counterpart Denis Sassou N’Guesso reflects their ongoing commitment to deepen economic integration and accelerate high-impact projects between the two nations.

A key focus of their discussions was the Brazzaville-Kinshasa road-rail bridge, one of Central Africa’s most transformative infrastructure ventures. Once completed, this bridge will connect the world’s two nearest capital cities, streamlining the movement of people and goods while boosting trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Energy cooperation also took center stage, with both leaders prioritizing the Energy Friendship Loop—a regional initiative to link electricity grids and enhance power supply across Central Africa. A formal agreement was signed to formalize this interconnection project, which includes the development of a massive hydroelectric dam on the Likouala aux Herbes River. With an estimated capacity of 12,900 megawatts, this tri-national venture—led by the Republic of the Congo, the DRC, and Angola—aims to position Central Africa as a regional energy powerhouse.

Beyond economic ambitions, the two heads of state also addressed regional security challenges and stability concerns in the Great Lakes and Central Africa. They underscored the necessity of dialogue and strengthened collaboration to safeguard peace, a prerequisite for sustainable development across both nations and the broader subregion.
