The Washington-backed peace accord between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda is collapsing under mounting pressure. Renewed clashes in North and South Kivu have intensified, while diplomatic efforts face deadlock despite sanctions and Washington’s involvement.
With the July 15 deadline now passed, the Washington-mediated peace deal signed in June 2025 between the DRC and Rwanda is unraveling. The agreement, brokered under U.S. supervision, demanded the withdrawal of Rwandan forces from eastern DRC, where they back the Congolese politico-military faction Alliance du fleuve Congo/M23 (AFC/M23). Yet, the group continues to control much of North and South Kivu.
The peace treaty included additional provisions, but progress has stalled. Statements from U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, had anticipated mid-July implementation. Instead, violence has flared across eastern DRC, leaving civilian communities caught in the crossfire.
