Laurent Gbagbo re-elected as head of PPA-CI in Côte d’Ivoire
Ivorian political party members gathered in Abidjan have renewed their support for Laurent Gbagbo, who was re-elected during an ordinary congress.
- Laurent Gbagbo has been re-elected as president of the PPA-CI during an ordinary congress held in Abidjan.
- The former Ivorian president, now 80, continues to lead the party he founded after his return from the International Criminal Court.
- Despite earlier statements about stepping down, party members convinced him to stay on as leader.
Party members rally behind Gbagbo
Nearly 3,000 delegates attended the congress at the Treichville Culture Palace in Abidjan. The gathering marked the formal re-election of Gbagbo, who was acquitted by the ICC in 2020 of crimes against humanity charges stemming from the 2010-2011 post-election crisis.
When Gbagbo announced in 2025 his intention to step back from active party leadership, his supporters insisted he continue, emphasizing his continued influence in Ivorian politics.
A new chapter for PPA-CI
The party now aims to strengthen its internal organization and revitalize its grassroots structures. Leadership sees this new mandate as an opportunity to prepare a gradual transition to a new generation of party leadership while maintaining Gbagbo’s political legacy.
