The Malian armed forces have declared that they have reclaimed the initiative and restored stability across all regions targeted by attacks from the Azawad Liberation Front in the north and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated group, operating in central and southern Mali.
Fierce clashes continue in northeastern Mali
In a formal statement, the Malian Army (FAMA) confirmed that intense fighting persisted on Sunday near Anifif, located in the northeast of the country, approximately 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The clashes followed the arrival of additional personnel and equipment dispatched to bolster the Azawad Liberation Front’s positions.
Unwavering determination against rebel advances
The military communiqué emphasized the resilience of Malian troops, stating: « In response to this escalation, our forces advanced with unwavering resolve, sustaining combat operations throughout the day with exceptional discipline and bravery. »
The statement further reaffirmed the army’s « absolute confidence in its capacity to safeguard national unity, protect civilians, and decisively defeat hostile forces. »
Rebel claims met with military denials
Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front, had earlier asserted control over Anfif following renewed clashes. He also dismissed reports of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, being killed, insisting that the commander remains actively engaged in directing military operations across northern Mali.
