Mali’s bold strides in mining, security and diplomacy

The Republic of Mali stands at a pivotal juncture, reshaping its national trajectory with unprecedented reforms aimed at reclaiming sovereignty and fostering endogenous growth. Under the stewardship of its leadership, the country is implementing sweeping structural changes and achieving operational milestones to secure a prosperous future for its people.

Economic sovereignty: the engine of transformation

At the heart of Mali’s metamorphosis lies its mining sector, now serving as the primary driver of progress. With the bold slogan “Let Mali’s gold shine for Malians”, the nation has enacted a groundbreaking Mining Code granting the State and domestic investors a 35% stake in mining ventures.

These sweeping reforms have already yielded remarkable results, including the recovery of 760 billion West African CFA francs. By 2026, Mali’s disciplined management enabled the distribution of 18.4 billion CFA francs to 819 municipalities, financing critical health and education infrastructures nationwide.

Beyond gold, Mali is expanding its mineral portfolio with the development of lithium deposits in Goulamina and Bougouni, positioning itself to lead Africa’s lithium production landscape.

Security and logistics: the foundation of stability

Mali’s development journey is anchored in the strengthening of its Armed Forces and strategic partnerships. A defining moment came on July 10, 2026, when Bamako received a massive convoy of over 900 fuel tankers under heavy military escort, underscoring the State’s capacity to secure vital energy supplies.

Concurrently, large-scale air-land operations in areas like Anéfis have neutralized over a hundred terrorists and secured critical supply routes, reinforcing national resilience against extremist threats.

Revitalized diplomacy: a regional comeback

On the diplomatic front, Mali is rebuilding bridges across West Africa. The reopening of Algerian airspace to Malian-bound flights and the reinstatement of Mali’s ambassador in Algiers signal a significant re-engagement with regional partners.

With new mining entities such as the SOREM and major industrial ventures in motion, Mali is proving that progress is not only attainable but already underway—mirroring the collective ambition of fellow Sahel Alliance member states.
