Ousmane diagne appointed president of Senegal’s constitutional council

In a decisive move reshaping Senegal’s judicial landscape, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has named Ousmane Diagne as the new president of the Constitutional Council. The appointment, formalized through decree number 2026-1318, marks a significant institutional transition following the passing of the council’s former leader, Mamadou Badio Camara.

Ousmane Diagne, a distinguished jurist with an extensive career in both the judiciary and government, returns to a pivotal role after being notably excluded from the initial cabinet formed under Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. His trajectory includes serving as Attorney General at the Dakar Court of Appeal and Chief General Counsel at the Supreme Court, positions that underscored his deep legal expertise.

During the early days of President Faye’s administration, Diagne held the influential post of Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals. However, subsequent governmental reshuffles led to his temporary departure from the executive branch. Today’s appointment signals his triumphant reintegration into a key constitutional body, reflecting both his enduring competence and the president’s strategic vision for the judiciary.

The Constitutional Council, tasked with resolving critical institutional and electoral disputes, has recently played a central role in navigating constitutional reforms. Under Diagne’s leadership, the council is poised to continue its vital function with renewed vigor, ensuring the equilibrium of Senegal’s democratic institutions.
