Political tensions in Sénégal as sonko rejects new government

The political rift between Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has now become impossible to ignore. During a press conference held on Tuesday in Dakar, the former Prime Minister outlined the reasons behind the Pastef-Les Patriotes party’s refusal to join the new cabinet led by Ahmadou Alamine Mohamed Lô.

Sonko explained that negotiations with the Head of State uncovered fundamental disagreements over critical national strategies. Key areas of contention include judicial reform, accountability measures, renegotiation of unfavorable economic contracts, and public debt management.

The Pastef leader stressed that he received no assurances regarding the government’s financial commitments or future dealings with international lenders. He also voiced concerns about subsidy policies and the administration’s approach to judicial governance.

Beyond policy disputes, the government’s composition emerged as another flashpoint. Sonko argued that his party, which holds majority support in Senegal, deserved substantial representation in the executive branch. He emphasized that the Pastef should not participate in the government unless it secured at least half of the ministerial portfolios.

Additionally, the former Prime Minister questioned the political legitimacy of the new administration, despite several of its members being allied with his movement. However, he clarified that the Pastef would not take immediate action to challenge the executive, stating that no vote of no confidence would be submitted against the government at this time.

This stance underscores the escalating tensions at the highest levels of government and signals a new phase of uncertainty in the relationship between the presidency and the leading force behind Senegal’s 2024 political shift.
