Against a backdrop of continental challenges, Senegal’s National Assembly Speaker Ousmane Sonko welcomed Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, president of the African Parliamentary Union’s Executive Committee, for strategic discussions on strengthening institutional cooperation.

On June 4, during the 85th session of the African Parliamentary Union’s Executive Committee, Ousmane Sonko, Speaker of Senegal’s National Assembly, held a high-level meeting with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, president of the UPA’s Executive Committee.

The talks centered on evaluating the UPA’s operational framework and exploring ways to enhance its impact on shaping Africa’s political and institutional agenda. With African nations facing evolving geopolitical and economic pressures, the discussions highlighted the urgent need for institutional reforms to boost the continental body’s effectiveness.

Sonko’s Vision for a Stronger African Parliamentary Union

Sonko outlined a series of proposals aimed at modernizing the UPA’s governance structure. Key among them was a call for restructuring the institution to deepen its influence over critical policy decisions across the continent. The Speaker emphasized that aligning the UPA’s initiatives with those of the African Union could significantly amplify collective efforts toward continental integration and development.
