The descendants of Serigne Touba have taken a firm stance against Ousmane Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party, declaring him persona non grata in Touba. This decision follows Sonko’s recent remarks alleging the circulation of “dirty money” in the holy city, which the collective deems deeply disrespectful to the spiritual significance of Touba and its founder, Serigne Touba Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba.
Collective accuses Sonko of defamation
In response to Ousmane Sonko’s statements, the collective filed a defamation complaint, arguing that his words tarnish the reputation of Touba. Mokhtar Bousso, spokesperson for the group, emphasized that the allegations of “dirty money” circulating in Touba are entirely unfounded and serve only to undermine the city’s moral and spiritual authority.
Respect for Touba’s sanctity at stake
Bousso stressed that Touba has long been a symbol of Senegalese resilience and generosity, contributing significantly to the nation’s economic, social, and cultural development. “Anyone who questions Serigne Touba’s legacy cannot claim to respect the city or its teachings,” he asserted. “Sonko’s remarks are a direct affront to the values upheld by Touba and its founder.”
Exclusion from Grand Magal celebrations
The collective has also called for Ousmane Sonko’s exclusion from the upcoming Grand Magal, Senegal’s most important religious gathering. Bousso argued that Sonko’s presence would be deeply inappropriate, given his controversial statements made just days before the event. “Touba is the heart of Mouridism,” he said. “Choosing this moment to make such claims is not only disrespectful but also undermines the unity and spiritual purpose of the Magal.”
Sonko urged to reconsider his stance
Bousso challenged Sonko to reflect on his words and actions, questioning whether he should ever return to Touba. “If he truly believes dirty money circulates here, he has no place in this city,” he stated. The collective maintains that Sonko’s allegations are baseless and demand a public apology to restore Touba’s honor.
