Senegal’s new government forms without pastef-les patriotes representation

Le Premier ministre sénégalais Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô

Senegalese Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Amine Mohamed Lô officially announced the formation of a new 30-member government on Monday evening. Notably, this executive team does not include representatives from the PASTEF-Les Patriotes party, despite its significant majority in the National Assembly.

This governmental restructuring unfolds amid a broader national political realignment, which has seen the incorporation of various technocratic and political figures into the cabinet. Hours prior to the official list’s publication, former Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko had publicly stated that members of his political movement would not participate in the new government. This decision followed extensive discussions with the President of the Republic, aligning with the party’s executive committee commitments and Sonko’s own affirmations upon his installation at the National Assembly.

Outlining the strategic direction for the newly appointed team, Prime Minister Lô characterized it as a “government of mission and obligation of results.” He highlighted its dual foundation of political and technocratic expertise, emphasizing a strong focus on integrating youth and women into key roles.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister detailed a commitment to a revised governmental approach, prioritizing institutional coherence and actively mobilizing the nation’s diverse competencies, including those of the Senegalese diaspora.

Several ministers from the previous administration have been retained in their portfolios. Among these are Cheikh Diba, who continues to lead the Ministry of Economy; Cheikh Niane, maintaining his role in Foreign Affairs; Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, overseeing Hydraulics and Sanitation; and Moustapha Guirassy, who remains at the helm of National Education.

Similarly, Ibrahima Sy retains his position in Health, Moussa Bala Fofana in Urban Planning, Yankhoba Diémé in charge of the Armed Forces, Déthié Fall managing Infrastructure, and Bakary Sarr continuing his work in Communication.

This comprehensive government overhaul follows President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s appointment of Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as Prime Minister on May 26. Lô succeeds Ousmane Sonko, who has since transitioned to the influential role of President of the Senegalese National Assembly.
