Senegal’s pastef party to assess diomaye faye’s fate in due course

Sonko clarifies party’s stance on potential exclusion of President Faye

The political landscape in Sénégal has been stirred by fresh allegations of betrayal levelled against President Diomaye Faye by members of his own party, Pastef. As calls for his removal gain momentum, Ousmane Sonko, a prominent figure within the party, has stepped forward to temper expectations, urging patience and adherence to established procedures.

In a recent interview, Sonko addressed the growing concerns surrounding Faye’s future in the party. He emphasised that Pastef operates with well-defined internal rules and that any decision regarding membership status must follow these protocols meticulously. «It will be evaluated when the time comes», Sonko stated, underscoring that Pastef’s structures are robust and capable of handling such matters judiciously.

The interviewer probed whether Sonko believed Faye had betrayed the party’s founding principles. Sonko, however, sidestepped moral judgments, opting instead to frame the issue through a political lens. «Betrayal is a moral concept, one tied to emotion. I prefer to focus on the political dimension», he explained. «What matters now is whether the commitments made to the Senegalese people—most of them, at least—are being honoured. There is no evident willingness to do so.»

Sonko’s remarks signal a cautious approach, one that distances itself from emotional or hasty decisions. He made it clear that Pastef remains far from reaching a conclusion on Faye’s status, reinforcing the party’s commitment to due process.
