SOLIBRA has officially inaugurated the ECO BOX project, a significant initiative designed to intensify the battle against plastic pollution and champion a sustainable circular economy within the Treichville commune. This launch coincided with World No Plastic Bag Day, observed on July 3, 2026.
The selection of Treichville for this pioneering effort stems from the considerable volumes of plastic waste generated daily in the area. These discarded plastics frequently clog drainage systems, compromising essential sanitation infrastructure. In response, ECO BOX aims to transform this waste into valuable resources through a meticulously structured collection and recycling framework.
This impactful project is built upon a robust partnership between SOLIBRA, the Fondation J’Adore de Treichville, and BIRWAST, a company specializing in plastic waste recycling. This collaborative synergy is poised to significantly enhance waste management practices, safeguard the urban environment, and cultivate fresh economic opportunities for local residents.
To ensure the seamless commencement of operations, essential equipment has been furnished to the operational teams. This includes six sturdy wheelbarrows, a dedicated collection tricycle, 80 refuse bags, twelve rakes, along with gloves, shovels, and traditional brooms, providing the necessary tools for effective waste collection.
Through the ECO BOX initiative, the collaborating partners are committed to achieving several critical objectives. These include the progressive elimination of plastic waste from drainage channels to substantially mitigate flood risks, the creation of vital employment opportunities for the commune’s youth as collection agents and drivers, and the valorization of collected plastics through efficient recycling processes.
A cornerstone of the project is also public awareness and education. The dedicated collection agents will play a crucial role in engaging residents, encouraging them to adopt proper waste sorting habits, and cultivating a community-wide culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility within Treichville.
The launch ceremony was highlighted by the symbolic cutting of the ribbon, officially marking the operational start of the ECO BOX project. This was followed by the handing over of keys for the first collection tricycle to one of the agents, who will now embark on the mission of traversing Treichville’s streets to gather plastic waste.
